Hi, I want to cancel a doorstep contract via email. Can anyone tell me what information HAS to be in the email. Common sense tells me to include my details, their details, order details and date of contract.

Thanks

What do their T&Cs say about cancelling? (Although I suspect email should be OK anyway).

When did you sign the contract/place the order?

Did you actually do it in your own property/away from the company's regular premises?

But anyway - as a minimum the name and address of the person who signed the contract, the order/contract number, and the date the order/contract was signed.

Thank you Bod1467, that's just the information I required. I don't want them to wriggle out of it due to me not giving enough details. I signed it within the past few days so am within the seven days cancellation period required and I signed it in my own home.

    Much appreciated

I would not cancel by email. Recorded delivery letter at the very least.

At least you have proof they received it. You dont get that with an email.

Most emails have the option of Read Reciept
A read receipt is an email notification delivered when a recipient opens (and presumably reads) an email you send. The receipt confirms that the recipient saw your message and records the time

So why waste £ when you can do it for FREE....

Apart from anything else, if sending a letter all you need is proof of postage not proof of receipt. AFAIK then a letter/notice is deemed served within 2 days of posting (first class).

Regarding email read receipts - I never send return notifications. My email program is set to ask me every time an open/read receipt is requested and I always say NO. ;)

yes, but some email clients pop up a messagebox stating that a read receipt has been requested and asking if you want to send the receipt. It is possible for someone to open an email, decline to send the receipt and then you have no proof of delivery or reading.

Hi, thank you for all the replies. I sent the email last night and received a phone call from them today saying it was cancelled BUT have received no reply from my email so I have nothing official. After reading the advice on here I've decided to send a recorded delivery letter.

    Thanks again

Did you keep a copy of the signed letter?

It would also be useful to send another email to thank then for their phone call (date/time/name if known) confirming cancellation of the account. This plus your phone records would also add weight to prove you cancelled.

I guarantee you'll never know if or when I read an email from you, read receipts are a custom extension using exchange servers, not a part of the SMTP protocol.

As above, send another email thanking them for their phone call on <date> at <time>, and confirming the cancelation of the contract.

At least that way, you have a record written down of when they phoned!

I used the above method at work a lot when my slime ball of a project manager used to phone and tell me to do things, then if it went wrong, deny everything!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
