Help With PayPal Dispute Please

Hi.
I bought an item from a retail web site using PayPal and received used goods sold as new. After frustrating emails between myself and the company I opened a PayPal dispute requesting a refund. Now I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do next.
Initially the seller has refused my request for a refund. Then there are two messages saying I have to return it to the registered address for a refund (which I am happy to do), but then the buyer has requested that the dispute be escalated to a claim. Then it was escalated to a claim by PayPal and not by me. This all happened within the space of about two minutes so I had no chance to respond to these messages. The first I knew was an email from PayPal saying it had been escalated to a claim.
Now the claim status is 'awaiting other party response' and the seller has 10 days to respond. I don't know what PayPal are waiting for from the buyer but I am reluctant to return the goods until I know for sure I will get my money back. It's somewhat confusing.
Please can anyone explain to me what's going on and what I need to now. Cheers.

So long as items are returned by a tracked service [with a tracking number that can be checked] you will get a refund.
Once a claim is opened paypal always give the other party 10 days to respond, thats just standard.0 -
A business cannot refuse a refund, so you can't lose a claim.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Thanks guys.

So shall I just sit tight and wait for the 10 days to be up before I do anything?

Yep, at the end of it paypal should find in your favour and then give you 10 days to get the item back to the seller. You will need to send it back fully tracked and insured- but once you have tracking showing an attempted delivery has been made your money will be refundedI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
