Dry Verge or Re Render??

Options
I have a detached property aprox 15 years old and both gable ends now have cracks in the mortar in the gable ends, with the odd bit missing here and there, not knowing much about this ive been advised that it would be better to go for a dry verge now rather than having these re rendered as this would only last for another 10 years or so and the dry verge would last a lot longer, can anyone comment either way on this and a rough cost of what i should be looking to pay for each Gable end - based in South Wales, thanks

Usually £10 per tile if fitted properly. Fitted properly means mortar raking out, tile laths extended etc, not simply drill and wall plugged to the mortar!

You can't beat a proper rake out and re-mortar from a proper roofer, dry verge looks tacky imho

    I agree with docmatt.

Your mortar should have lasted far longer than this so it was not done properly in the first place. The ten years you have been quoted is nonsense.

The secret is in the sand, the sand mix, and the cement.

Dry verge if done properly can be OK but looks awful and the plastic, assuming this is what you are considering, is problematic. The quality can be poor, with uv degradation, brittleness and fading.

I have seen these plastic dry verges stuck on with dabs of silicone, and I have seen them nailed into the mortar. Neither is recommended. For many people they are yet another "home improvement" con trick.
