I too have bought a couple of plates from Newreg & whilst they're not the cheapest they do take the most hassle out of the whole process.
You'll only need a donor vehicle (& extra £80 charge) if the plate you are buying has not already been issued on a vehicle in the UK. Alternatively, if you have any friends or family on the mainland, see if they'd let you use their vehicle as a donor although this means that the supplier (newreg for example) will only transfer the plate to the mainland vehicle & then it's up to you to transfer it to NI.
Also bear in mind that you can NOT appear to make a car look newer than it is, i.e. putting an "Y" reg which is 2001 on a 1999 car. Although given that you're talking about a plate for a new unregistered car then it won't matter.
You're car dealer may also be able to help you with the donor side of things by having the plate put on the car in the mainland before it's shipped to you. For example, you're car would effectively be registered as being sold from "Joe Bloggs Ford London" as opposed to "Lyndsay Ford Bangor" if you know what I mean. Therefore your car would be a UK mainland car doing away with the need for a donor.
Hope this makes sense & helps.0 -

Sorry, i'm not getting your comments about a donor vehicle being required? Why would you want to do that if newreg do that for you (which they do)?0 -
Because they charge for you for using their vehicle (moped I believe)0

No thats not the case - they didnt with the reg i bought and also from their T&C's "Where a registration mark is to be assigned to a vehicle registered in Northern Ireland there will also be a DVLNI transfer charge of £80. In such circumstances the Company will assign the mark in the first instance to one of our own vehicles and the maximum transfer time allowed shall be extended for a further 28 days."
The £80 is the extra transfer fee, which you have to pay anyway.0 -

Was your plate previously "unissued" or a "transfer" ?
I bought my most recent plate from Newreg in December (finally got it on the car in March). As the plate hadn't been on a vehicle before (unissued), it needed to be assigned to a manland uk vehicle before it could be "transferred" to an NI car. Newregs price includes the vehicle transfer fee (£80) a 2nd fee is then required to get it to an NI car (another £80) as you state.
However the charge for them putting it on one of "their" vehicles is £100 ... I have the receipt. Therefore by using a friend / family vehicle on the mainland as your Donor, you'll save the charge or as previously posted, get your dealer to register your "NEW" car directly with the plate from Newreg (or other cherished plate transfer company) via a mainland UK dealership.0
