I know its not exactly money saving, but does anybody know how to go about this in Northern Ireland. Obviously it would be an English plate i'd be after, so how does this would with the DVLA/DVLNI?

easy - go to https://www.newreg.com.
I've bought several from there and they do all the transfer work to N.I.0 -
I too have bought off new reg and they do the work for you, though you have to pay a double tranfer fee. once to transfer to a donor car in england and then to your own car in northern ireland. also a charge for doing this around £45
so it would be price of number plate + £100 tansfer + £100 transfer + £45 charge + vat0 -
hate being stung twice for something!!if i had known then what i know now0

https://www.dvla-som.co.uk is the official DVLA web site selling old (i.e. ABC123Y and A1 ABC) new style (i.e. AB51 ABC) unissued registrations. The prices quoted include VAT and transfer. I do not know about Northern Ireland, but it would be worth taking a look. If an unissued number is acceptable then you will not get cheaper than this DVLA.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. Have a look on dvlni website they may have some info, plus everytime you change your car its £100 to change the plate over, but sure ......i thinks they are nice whatever floats your boat as they say.0

I'm sure there's nothing to stop you, if you know someone who lives on the mainland that is, to register your car in your name at their address. Once they get the V5 from Swansea then buy the English plate and pay the one transfer fee. Then when the new V5 arrives to that address for the new reg, apply for a logbook back to your address here through the DVLNI in Coleraine.0

Thanks for the help guys! Anyone know how its done for buying a new previously unregistered car? Any easier that way?if i had known then what i know now0

registering your car in england will have insurance implications too, so you will no doubt have to pay an admin fee to your insurance company, then another one back.
Also i'd have though your insurance company would take a dim view if you had an accident in northern ireland, when your car was insured in england, and yet you still worked here for example?
All a bit chancey to save £80.0 -

How i normally get round that is if i'm trading my car in, when the deal is down to the line, i say 'ok i'll do the deal if you pay for my reg to be transferred'0 -

Phone newreg and ask them - they'll have come upon it before.
I dont think there is any (sensible) way round the two transfer fees, but you should still be able to get a decent plate for well below £500.
If its just to make your car stand out, you can buy a plate online from wilsons auctions in mallusk
http://www.securewebpayments.co.uk/readyreg/index.asp?offset=0
for example, GCZ 727 for £250. From their site "The £80 assignment fee, the 10% auctioneers commission & VAT are all included in the total price"0
