Looking for reasonable insurance for imported car

Hi,
I am new to the UK. I just moved in from France - so I have a French license plate. I lived in the US before with US driver's license - so my driving license is considered "international". As if that wasn't enough, most insurance companies cannot find my car (Opel Corsa 2003 make, 1.7 Diesel manual left-hand-drive 3 door) on their data base. These companies say that such cars ought to be "5 door" - but, well, I am driving the car and it has only 3 doors! Maybe, it is a common make in France but not found on the UK data base.
DVLA won't register it unless I have a UK insurance. One company offered to do the insurance asking for nearly 1500 pounds per year for premium!
Anybody has any similar experience or suggestions? I will greatly appreciate some help!!
Thanks

£1,500 premium with no NCD (No Claims Discount) doesnt sound bad as with maximum NCD you'd be looking at a premium of £450 which is well below the UK average now.
Add to that the lack of experience of driving on the UK roads and you'll be getting a loading for that too -v- if you had held a UK license for as long as you've held your current one.
If you just need UK insurance then you could look at one of the short term insurers but you will need to ensure it is one that is suitable for a car not otherwise insured as most do stipulate that there must be at least a TPO policy already on the vehicle (ie it is designed for you borrowing a friends car etc)0 -

If you are now considered to be resident in GB, your US driving licence is only valid for 12 months, to keep driving you must apply for a provisional GB licence, and pass the theory and practical driving test before the 12 months is up.0
