old accounts and no paperwork

Hello all and thanks for looking at my thread.
My question is this; I am 40 years old and over the years have had a number of mortgages, loans and many credit cards as I used to switch balances quite regularly. I have only the paperwork available for my current mortgage and credit card which don't show any PPI payments. However, I feel pretty sure that over the years there will have been some PPI payments made that I was unaware of, given that often the practice with lenders was to use "opt out" tick boxes. I can generally remember most of the names of the providers but am wondering without policy/account numbers or any written documentation, how do I find out if I've ever paid PPI's and therefore if I'm owed any recompense? Is it a case of ringing the providers and giving them my address and asking if they have anything on record for me? really not sure where to go with this? also my old accounts will most likely have been in my maiden name as I've only recent got married, so I'm wondering if I'll need to send off marriage certificate etc..?
Many thanks for anyone that can help me with this. :A
