Noisy Tower unit ??

Can anyone advise as to why my tower unit keeps whirring, I'm assuming it's the fan but it keeps stopping and starting so many times.

could be catching on something or the fan on the heat sink for the cpu - make sure everything is clean/clear and pref use 120mm fans - they're quieter

Could be the case vibrating. Make sure the feet are sitting flush and the case is not touching anything.

As above, it could be the case vibrating or many other things.

if it is an 'unusual' noise, then check the fans themselves aren't loose, or that the bearings arent going. If you GENTLY placed a finger or pencil or something on the middle of the fan while it is making the noise and it stops then the bearings could be at fault.

If it is normal fan noise, the unit could just be warm. Make sure there is adequate ventilation for it and make sure the grills behind any fans or over the CPU aren't covered in layers of dust causing heat build up.

There are a few possible reasons
knackered fan, either the power supply, cpu cooler or a case fan. checking the latter 2 is easy just stop the fans spinning and see if it reduces the noise. the powersupply fan is a little harder as you dont want to be sticking anything in there especially while it is on but if there is a problem with the PSU fan the PSU will be warm if not hot.

Some pc's have active fan control where the fans kick in when it is warm and make a bit of noise oposed to their quieter running mode. this is more comon in laptops but desktops also use this method as well. My sisters pc was like this but the constat quiet to noisy anoyed her and was more distracting than the fans on all the time so I disabled the fan control so now the fans spin all the time.

Many thanks for all your advice, I opened the tower unit and it was full of dust, so I've given it a good clean out and at the moment it seems to have solved the problem.

    Thanks everyone
