Bank accounts which allow additional cardholder?

Hi,
My wife and I would like to have a joint account to pay for bills, mortgage, grocery shopping etc. Unfortunately I have a shocking credit history and am currently insolvent, whilst my wife's credit history is squeeky clean - under these circumstances we obviously don't want to become financially associated by getting a joint account.
Does anyone know if any banks allow an additional cardholder for a current account? - this way my wife could open an account, we could each have a card and fund the new account by transferring cash from our existing accounts.
I know that this is possible for credit cards, but not sure I've ever heard of it with current accounts.
Cheers!

Nope current accounts don't allow additional card holders on the account unless its a joint one, then each person gets a card.

Natwest used to allow you to add an authorised person who wasnt a joint account holder.

So the account is purely one parties but both parties can withdraw etc

Most banks will, it's called a third party mandate. It varies by bank whether they'll give the authorised third party a card though - at least, I'm not aware of any that will.

Not only that, but it will also give the authorised person virtual carte blanche access to your account.

OP You say you are insolvent - does this mean bankrupt??

If so don't even try to get 3rd party authority on the account let alone a joint account as a credit search will show your credit status and will result in a straight decline.

    I'm currently in an IVA.

Having done some further research it looks as if Barclays allow joint applications for their basic cashcard account - as this is a basic account does that mean that a joint account wouldn't financialy link us? I currently have one of these accounts and it certainly doesn't show up on my credit history.

They now credit check this type of account and have done for a while now. They do this to determine what sort of card you can have one the account.

I've never heard of a third party mandate holder being credit checked.

As per my post, at least 18 months ago NatWest still would issue a third party a card. May have changed since then as I decided not to switch my banking to them
