credit card surcharged on a MasterCard debitcard

Yesterday I had to have a CRB check, the company took my card details and later processed the payment. I then received an emailed receipt which stated that I had been charged £1.50 credit card surcharge. My debit card is a MasterCard debit card not a credit card, why has this happened? I have emailed the company concerned but not heard back yet.

There are very few Debit MasterCards in the UK, so the payment processor probably didn't have the BIN list updated (A list of card types with their first 6 numbers). I'm sure the email will get it sorted.

You may need to send them proof that it's a debit card e.g. a picture of the card (with the middle eight digits and expiry date blanked out of course)

Exactly, they only need to see enough of the card to be happy what they've been sent is a photo of the actual card used to pay - obviously the details they already have are insufficient to identify it as a debit card otherwise they wouldn't have charged the £1.50... Although a lot of effort to go to for the sake of £1.50.

Hopefully they'll just refund it as said.
