    Incorrect.

    PLEASE DON'T BREAK IT !!!!

Use coupons that Tesco can pass on to their wholesalers/manufacturers which allow them to actually collect the face value of the voucher

Spot on... totally agree that we need to be careful. The coupons acceptance is a gift from Tesco, who I have heard are aware of this site.

So lets not be greedy and derail the generous gravy train

This thread is starting to echo the old Tesco discussion thread regarding R&R and I would not be surprised if the door is closed, in some form or another, at some point in the not too distant future. However coupon use appears to be exponentially growing and if this is the case then the die is cast. R&Rers that did hold back at the end of last year in reality lost out as those that made hay while the sun shone filled their boots.

An argument could be made for going at it hammer and tongs from now on to make the most of a good thing while it lasts. I personally don't go nuts on the coupons as I shop at a small store and am happy with a regular discount on my shopping. Could not condemn the committed who work hard at saving/gaining as much as possible. Each to their own.

According to Nov/Dec 2005 issue of 'Bookselling Essential' The journal of the Booksellers Association, all 698 Tesco stores became new members of the Booksellers Association in 2005.

    http://www.booksellers.org.uk/documents/BA_Newletters/newsletter_nov05.pdf

Therefore, should this still be the case, and as yet I have googled nothing to the contrary, as members they can reclaim the value of the booktoken and their profits remain undented. As such this token appears to be no worse than any other and I feel happy that we should continue to use it.

Should anyone have any evidence to the contrary, for example Tesco left the Association after one year then please let us know.

If that IS the case then fair enough, it is the same as any other coupon.

However the website provided in order to determine where you can use this voucher does NOT have Tesco listed in the 3000+ stores shown.
I am not the first person to suggest that they are not members - this was raised a month or two ago.
Although another difference with this voucher compared to 99.99% of others is that it is actually referred to as a "BOOK TOKEN"

Another thing that addresses globalds query and reinforces the "non-redeemable" nature of this at Tesco is .......

....... if you read the "To the BOOKSELLER T&Cs"

    It states :

"Acceptance of this SPECIAL BOOK TOKEN indicates a commitment to sell the above edition of The Life Of The Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson at £4 (a saving of £3.99 off RRP) ........... cont."

Now this probably should be the other way round "at £3.99 (a saving of £4)" but that "error" doesn't actually matter.

Most participating bookstores (eg Waterstones, WHSmiths etc.) will be selling this at the full price of £7.99 - this Book Token should knock off £4 (or £3.99) from this price.

Tesco have already discounted this book ( to only £3.73 ) and I would image the Booksellers Association know this already whether Tesco are members or not (I say probably not BECAUSE of the prices they sell their books at)

Anyone ever BOUGHT a Book Token at Tesco ?
I've bought them at Waterstones and WHS, which strangely enough is where you can redeem them !

Yes, I agree, checked that out also. Does question it a bit. Haven't tried to look for any other descepancies. Very little information available on the web but their newsletter looks positive for us.

Guess the best route would be to send Tesco an email asking if they take book tokens, only downside here would be that there is a fair chance 5 emails would get 5 different responses. Is the way of the behemoth that is Mr T (and often works to our advantage).

I think it will all start to go wrong when they receive more coupons for redemption than books sold. Less likely to happen with the DM/Times magazine coupons. As ever MSErs can be victims of their own success. Wouldn't want coupons to go the way of R&R but word does seem to be spreading that you can save heaps with bits of paper.

If they have allowed their membership to lapse they should rejoin sharpish as they must have a shedload of DMs by now.

  • I went to Tesco today and got the book with one of the printed of vouchers. They wouldnt accept the other one even on a separate transaction-I had to buy the book. However, the kindly SA sai "if I get one again I will just put it through"" life is too short". I took the hint from this and returned to her with some more goods and the coupon. Im being cheeky I said-she laughed and put it through. I went home after that-didnt use the clubcard either-its a tracker card after all!

  • Neither Tesco or Asda have let me use these coupons in the past to purchase the book, never mind off other shopping.
  • The printable voucher states "bookselling chains and most independant bookshops and asks you to check online at https://www.nationalbooktokens.co.uk. Ive been on this site but couldnt find anything to say that tesco was a participating outlet. Maybe I was looking in the wrong part of the site.

But that's the whole point - they aren't.
Have you not read this thread from post 8 ?

The price that Tesco has decided to put on the book is up to them. That was the whole point of the Net Book Agreement being done away with a few years ago: big companies like Dillon's (remember them?) and supermarkets wanted to be allowed to discount books heavily to attract customers, instead of having to stick to the price on the book cover.

I don't think it would make any difference to Tesco being, or not being, a member of the Bookseller's Association - they would not be frowned upon for heavy discounting - those days have gone.

Re using book tokens for something else: as has been said, it probably comes down to which SA you get at the the checkout. If all else fails, why not try buying another BOOK...come on, there must be more than one worth reading in there?!.....
