Proof of legal status to LL

hI

I am advised that new legislation states that I now have to provide proof that I am in the UK legally.

I do not want to forward my original docs ( site of original docs is the normal requirement) can i pay for a solicitor to write a legal doc to cover this.

Many thanks

Who advised you of this as I am not aware of it. I know that it was presented as a proposal but has not even been debated in the House yet.

To be honest, I wouldn't be prepared to spend money on a sworn statement from a solicitor until I had been asked for this in writing.

This has been discussed as apossibilitity but is NOT a legal requirement

Having saidthat, as a landlord, i would want sight of evidence of your ID, reason for being here (for income purposes) etc).

You can get a 'Certified Copy' of passport etc from a solicitor for around £10. Many will do it free if you are using their services for something else too.

  • I look on potential tenants unfavourably if they are unwilling to provide original documetns

That's the trouble with living in a country with no ID cards.

Not everyone has a passport. If you don't travel, why would you get one?
    Not everyong drives.
And who accepts birth certificates as ID?!!

(now I'll sit back and wait for replies on the compulsory ID debate...)

I would use the expired passport if ID was requested and point out that even though the document may be several years old, that certainly doesn't stop you being you :)

Take photos copies with you when you meet your landlord or letting agent.
Show them the originals and give them the copies.
Mention Data protection and ask how they will care for your valuable copies!!! with very Important information on them :-)

I was quite (pleasantly) surprised when I had to get a solicitor to do a proof of ID for me recently. Although I took other things along as well, she was perfectly happy with my 3-years expired passport for the photo ID part.

Obviously, my ugly mug has only got a little more ugly in the last 13 years
