Postage underpaid items

I have had a card through the letterbox from Royal Mail saying they have an item which was sent to me with underpaid postage.
It says i need to go their depot and pay their fee in order to collect it, or they will send it back to the sender after 3 weeks.

Does anyone know what happens if the item does not have a return address?

It goes to Belfast where it will be opened to see if there is any return address on the contents of the letter/package. If not, it will be destroyed.
Here I go again on my own....
  • As Becles says. All items without a return address are sent to the Returned Letter Centre in Belfast. There, they will open it and look for any clues as to where it came from.

If it is something you were not expecting or did not solicit, then you should be given the option when you go to collect it to look at it in front of staff and opt not to accept it thereby not paying any surcharges. It is up to the discretion of the staff at the callers office so try it.

    Thanks for the responses.

I'm surprised they're allowed to open or destroy people's mail tho.

If you don't collect it and there is no obvious return address, what else can they do with it?

    yeh, i know.
It just seems that sending it to Belfast, opening it and destroying it is a bit extreme and a lot of trouble to go to just because the sender was a few pence short on the postage.

If they delivered it anyway, people would soon catch on and every parcel would be a few pence short. :D
