What happends to my PPI refund if my 9 year old debt is with Lowell?

I know this question may have been asked a lot before now... but tomorrow I am going to find out from Lowell whether or not they bought the debt from HSBC or whether they just act on behalf of them to collect the debt. I'm sure they told me they bought the debt.
I will ask them for proof that they purchased it when I ring them tomorrow. However, if they did buy the debt, and can prove it, does that mean that IF the HSBC uphold my PPI reclaim, do the HSBC have to pay the money back to me, or to Lowell?
Any helpful advice would be much appreciated! Thanks
