Thanks for this Surbybird - it was in Southsea, Hants and I would hazard a guess that the front garden depth was around 15'...........

Same council as us then, Hampshire CC. The minimum depth is actually 4.8m, which is 15ft 9 or thereabouts. Link below leads to the 'Application for Vehicle Crossing Checklist' on the council website.

    http://www3.hants.gov.uk/dropped-kerb-checklist.pdf

On that basis, we were refused because were were a couple of feet short for getting our car on at right angles to the pavement without any part of the car protruding onto it.

I guess that most councils have similar rules and regs.

Leeds council won't do the work for you and ask for £40 admin, this is for someone to see if you can drop the curb then someone to check the work once it's done.

It provides the technical specifications and you get your contractor to do the work.

    I think that's great.

I Paid £774 for mine to be dropped the north of the country

The person said £20 each, they might do it for that but it would be a half arsed job.

The guys took over half a day to do mine.

Just rang South Tyneside for mine & was quoted £955 for a single 3 metre dropped curb or £1500 for a double!

Just to rub salt into the wound I said "but I can get it done my self then get the work inspected by the council yes?" I was told yes... but because the council was sick of being undercut on prices they introduced a £650 fee 2 years ago that all contractors have to pay the council for doing a dropped curb to make things "more fair"!!! Obviously this creates a monopoly for the council & it's impossible for a tradesman to give a competitive quote with this extortionate £650 fee included. I assume the council were aware that they were massively over charging and so thought they'd introduce this to stop people getting the work done for a fair price & instead take the eyes out of everyone who needs a drive.

My street is a nightmare for parking & I thought I mite just be able to scrape affording a cheapo bog standard single car gravel drive if a dropped curb cost up to around £500 at the absolute max, but £955 bursts my rubbish budget :(

I don't even need the curb lowering in practical terms, just for legality as its only about 3 inches high. I know they say a curb may be damaged if it's not lowered but he irony is because the street is so tight EVERYONE without exception parks with 2 wheels on the curb anyway be it rite or wrong, otherwise traffic would not be able to pass through.

Cheers South Tyneside Council ya greedy barstewards!

At our last house the council charged £100 for someone from the council to come and have a look to say yes or know, we were then charged £750 to have it dropped. Our council would only allow it if they felt that the entrance to the driveway was appropriately placed, e.g. on a straight stretch of road with good visibility and not near a bus stop, they would also encourage you to get mirrors fitted to walls/fences that could block your view of pedestrians when reversing out.
