vauxhall lifetime warranty query

Hi

I'm looking at buying a vehicle to retire with so a Jap/Korean with 5-7 years or longer warranty has certain attractions.;)

Someone mentioned to me Vauxhall's lifetime warranty. The web site says on the subject that most items covered except wear and tear and wiring harness or hoses , limited only by maximum 100k miles . No time limit which is good as I presume not to do many miles a year. Fairly reasonable it seems.

However I found the following worrying.

The warranty does not extend to the fixing of consequential damage caused by the covered components mentioned above.

So if a cam belt/ whatever snapped and trashed the engine they would just pay for a new belt but not a short engine to be fitted ?

They also say

Vauxhall at its discretion may elect to agree with the owner a value for the vehicle in case the parts and labour cost of the repair exceeds the economic value of the vehicle, or in case the parts are no longer available.

I take that to mean they will buy the vehicle back at an agreed value?

Anyone got any thoughts/knowledge of this warranty?

Your right with the first part.

    This part.

Once your car reaches a certain age. Even 7 years. The value of the car will be very low. So they reserve the right to pay you the cars value if the repairs are expensive.

I've got a car under the warranty, not had to claim yet luckily.

I assume the second bit covers their back if you had a massive warranty claim in 10-20 years time when the car is worth less than the parts to fix it.
  • Difficult one, either they'll behave with honour like Toyota or treat their customers with contempt which applies to several of but not restricted to German makes.

As is the case with these things it won't be till expensive things like engines and gearboxes fall apart or the electric handbrake fails for the umpteenth time that reports will start to circulate.

What i suspect will happen is that dealers will be as progressively as uncooperative as possible (as if) taking as long as possible to fix the cars as they age that the owner is gradually persuaded/coerced into upgrading their car, warranty work isn't lucrative the maker isn't paying the ripoff labout rates that joe public is so the long term owner is likely to be a long term nuisance in the dealers eyes.

If the belt snaps and trashes the engine they will fit a new belt to your scrap engine.

Consequential losses are not covered. The damaged engine is a consequence of the belt snapping.

I thought it said 10 years somewhere also?

    There's always a catch....

Most people don't do their research, most people just believe all the glossy sales hype.

If the belt snaps prematurely (as Vauxhalls have historically been prone to) then if they won't cover consequential damage in this case, the 'warranty' isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

    That's outrageous if true.

The 10 years is BS. There's no time limit on Vauxhalls warranty as long as you remain the owner and keep it below 100,000 miles.
