Maybe too late for you if you've mailed it today, but for us, the PO's 'check and send;' was worth the few quid it costs, as you know everything's OK when they accept it. We'd left it a bit late (4-5 weeks prior to travel), needed a new photo endorsed, and our lawyer neighbour managed to fill in the wrong line on the application form (which is a tiny bit tricky). The PO spotted it so we could have another go on a fresh form, but if we'd just mailed it, we'd have lost a couple of weeks and the postage. It's also easy to offend the new photo guidelines!
But if you have lots of time- you'll probably be OK mailing it. Bon Voyage anyway0
