Skirting boards and uneven walls

I've got some skirting boards in my bedroom (future bedroom, lots of renovation to do still) that are uneven against the wall. Sometimes they have a ledge on top of up to a 10mm and other times the walls sits directly on top of them. The walls are lath and plaster and I don't really want to rip it all down to put up plaster boards.

Does anyone know how I could put up new skirting board that is more uniform without having to replace all the walls? I thought about putting new skirting board which is slightly taller directly over the top of the old, I'm not sure if this is the best thing to do because it could leave gaps.

Any advice welcome, thanks.

The problem is they're in need of sanding before they can even be painted, plus they have holes from where old plug sockets used to be. If i try to remove them I'm worried where the wall is on top of them, I'll end up ripping down half the wall as well. Not sure I can just ignore the state they are in.

I did remove some of mine, and yes great chunks of plaster came off with them. In one room I didn't bother putting them back, just re-plastered down to the floor.

If you don't want to take the risk of removing them, you may need to fill all the holes and get busy with the sandpaper.

    Good luck!

I think it sounds as though you have a choice between putting up with uneven walls and skirting boards and redoing the walls; if you're fussy like me about things like that it will always annoy you when you notice them.

In two rooms of my house the wall above the picture rails was originally as a noticeable angle off vertical on one wall due to being bodged when built 65 years ago. It annoyed me so much I had to reboard the whole wall to get it vertical when redecorating.

It was a pain prizing the picture rail off, reboarding, putting the rail back on etc but it just had to be done in my opinion!

I just used decorator's caulk to fill hole's and cracks along our uneven skirting boards, but I like all the odd lumps and bumps in walls and on the skirtings, in my mind it add's to the character of the property. Having said that, we did take a power sander to some of the extreme lumps and bumps, and made them slightly less bumpy ;)
