Why can't I see the files?

My laptop has finally bitten the dust. I've taken the hard drive out of it and stuck it in an external usb caddy and linked it to another laptop.

However, all I can see are the 'recover' files, I can't see any of the stuff I have stored on the hard drive.

I've made sure the 'show hidden files' option was selected but I'm stumped now.

I took the hard drive out of an old desktop pc previously and could access all the files on it easily, using the same method so why can't I see the files on the laptop hard drive?

Both drives are SATA and the caddy is suitable for both sizes btw.

The drive is partitioned and it's only picking up the first partition.

    Thank you.

At first glance it looks complicated, I'll need to read through thoroughly.

    Any further help please?

    I can see both partitions....

....not a very clear pic, sorry, but after the main pc hd, there is a 'Local Disk E' entry with no detail, followed by a 'Recover J' (which I can access and see the files etc, then there is 'Local Disk K' which shows up as having some data on it but when I open it, it says 'this folder is empty'.

I tried to change permissions but it can't access k to do so.

Is the drive corrupted and I've lost everything on it?

I've just downloaded Recuva. It can access the disk and finds 65 files which it ignores and then says the disk is empty. I can't see an option to not ignore things. (free version.)

Win 7. (Main pc which I've now joined old lappy to via usb, is 64 bit, lappy was 32 bit). Yes.

I can't read the partition letters, but it's your 'C' partition that you should be looking for-that's where your data will be. But can you not restore the data from another backup?

But the C drive is the main pc hard drive.....I'm trying to get the files from the K drive I took out of the laptop.

I've been searching for info online and apparently if Recuva lists files as being ignored then it's because they are 0 bytes and are unrecoverable.

I've lost months worth of Excel financial sheets, OH's work stuff and loads of pictures of daughter. I was going to back up to a new hard drive I'd bought for the purpose the following day but it became unusable a few hours too early. :(

Can't read that pic but what does it say under Local drive K for, presumably, the amount used and capacity? It looks like it is in MB rather than GB. Are you not expecting more data than this?
