Why can't I see the files?

Thought I'd update in case it helps anyone else....(this isn't the MSE version btw so look away now if you're averse to spending money on this kind of thing
).
I ran several free progs and had mixed results, many files were being found but were listed as being corrupted or were unable to be opened for other reasons.
I ended up paying for a program called 'Recover My Files'. Absolutely brilliant prog, it recovered everything and all still in the same pathways as before so I could just find my user folder for example and all my budget excel sheets were there in the documents folder within. It was just like clicking on a file as I would normally.
I am sure there would have been a free method of doing similar but whilst I class myself as reasonably savvy, I just didn't have the time nor the inclination to keep looking for it or to have to try to repair the resulting corrupted files tbh.
The prog cost $69.95 so roughly £46. I think it's probably the first time I've bought software instead of using free stuff so I figure spending £46 in the whole scheme of things was acceptable given how important some of my files were.
The relief I felt when I saw everything was able to be recovered was well worth the money.
Thanks to all for your input on the thread.

Good result. Have you now backed up your data properly to avoid this scenario in future though? No free lunch, and no free laptop
