Cheap family holiday in the Lake District?

We've decided to holiday as cheaply as possible this year, to save some money. As we live within 2 hours of the Lakes and haven't been here for many years we thought this would be a great place to bring our 2 kids aged 11 and 8.
Looking for suggestions of where to stay and don't mind exactly what we stay in, we could potentially borrow a load of camping gear (although our car is tiny)
Anyone got any good suggestions of what and where we should be looking at?
Many thanks.

These guys have an excellent selection of self catering properties. We use them regularly. More expensive than camping but might be worth a look0 -
Hi
Have you thought about staying in a youth hostel ? They do family unsuited rooms.

What about those 'camping pods' ?
Our kids still a bit young so not tried it myself but I know others who have enjoyed it. They're like little sheds, some with heating and lighting. So you'd just need sleeping bags, no tent, just google lake district camping pods0 -
Some suggestions. Premier Inn or Travelodge at Kendal
Independent hostels in Kendal or Ambleside.
Groupon a number do regular groupon offers.
Head west much cheaper in Whitrlehaven or MaryportThe futures bright the future is Ginger0 -
I came on here to ask the same question. We have 8 year old and 18 month old and usually book a cottage in the Peak District as dd enjoys the theme parks in the area but think it is time for a change.
Can anyone recommend an area in the Lake District which has plenty for the children. We enjoy days in nice parks and we don't need hectic theme parks every day so any info welcome.0 -
We are going up for a couple of days and are staying in the travelodge in morecambe. It was half the price of Kendal and is only 20 miles away. I think it cost me £26 for a family room.0

Coming from the area you are going can I mention about the Travelodges and Premier Inns at Kendal. The Premier Inn is in the centre of Kendal which is a nice market town with some nice cafes. The Travelodge is not in Kendal itself but on the way to Kendal and is situated outside Kendal on a dual carriageway, this makes it less suitable for walking into Kendal. I would say it is more useful as a stop off on the way to the Lake District if you are fancying Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere.0

Park Foot at Pooley Bridge on the banks of Lake Ullswater

Or if you prefer a holiday park thats got quite a bit going on for the kids I can recommend Stanwix Park in Silloth. However this would be a good hour's drive to the Lake's

I agree with the idea of a youth hostel that somebody else posted.. There is one in the middle of Ambleside overlooking Lake Windermere and I'm sure they will have family rooms. It is handy for amenities such as the boats that do tours on Lake Windermere and there are b us services that will take you to other towns and villages nearby such as Bowness on Windermere and Grasmere.0
