Moving gas meter outside

Hi all

2nd post of the day

We are renovating our kitchen, and are debating whether to move the gas meter outside.

I'm not clear on who / how we get this done? Can a gas safety engineer do this for us? Or do we have to go through Transco / National Grid?

And what is the approximate cost of doing so?

We are based in Notts.

Any advice very very welcome!
Thanks
Steve

Well its a pity your in Notts..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

You will have to use an approved National Grid contractor as the gas meter and the supply leading to it is National Grid's property.

and if it's anything like moving an electric meter, it will be expensive. Best to get a price early on

Yep the in laws just had a quote for this and was extortionate. They want it moving for a downstairs shower room.

They have decided to move into a bungalow now!

It is possible to do it much cheaper.

Had this done a couple of months ago. We just paid just shy of £500 to move ours from internal wall to external. This was for a < 2m move. It jumps up a fair bit over 2m. We paid another £150 to have our gas safe engineer reconnect everything back up, although National Grid can also do that.

This is the place to start: http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Gas/Connections/GasServices/MoveMeter/

FWIW we were expecting it to be a real hassle but they were really good. Lots of communication, arrived on time, did their business, got off. Can't complain really.

(Moving the electric was MUCH more expensive)

its controlled by a quasi !!!!! just as with electrics and therefore you will have to wait and pay a significant amount.

True. One option is to wait until you see a national grid van sitting around (they're all over the place) and see if any of them fancy doing a foreigner. We had our groundwork and water main done this way by a fella that works for one of the national companies. Saved us a fortune.
