Why open a resolution case?

We bought something from a seller on Ebay which was faulty. We notified the seller immediately and sent photographs etc. he asked various questions etc and then said he would refund. This was late last week, no refund received and sent an email to him yesterday asking when we would receive it and he has told us to open a resolution case?
Why would he need us to do this?

Because then e-bay will have a record of the claim.
This is particularly important with 'items not recieved'. If a buyer claims every other purchase is not being received, this will flag up a note to e-bay to watch this buyer - providing each claim goes through the resolution centre and there is a record of them.
I would just open a case as suggested and follow the automated process.0 -

I have opened a resolution case so hopefully this will be resolved quickly as I have had to buy a replacement as I need it this week.0 -

Possibly the seller has decided he wants the item back, so getting you to open a case will mean you need to post it back for a refund. (Seller should pay as it's faulty, but ebay have no way to make him).They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0 -
I always ask buyers to open a case, so there's at least a record of it. This is because the problem rate on ebay is around 3 x higher than anywhere else I sell. I have no doubt a lot of buyers are abusing the system, so if there's a record there's more chance of them being caught.0

No reason not to, get your FVF back, and as long as the buyer isn't a serial INR or SNAD freak, it won't impact on them either.0
