Moving to Hertfordshire - advice

Hi All
I will be moving to Hertfordshire this September and wondering if anyone can help recommend some nice towns/areas.
Im returning to university, studying at University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield. Haven’t seen much of Hatfield, but what I have seen doesn’t look too good. So thinking of living in another area and driving to uni. Obviously want to keep petrol costs down, so thinking no more than a 10mile radius around Hatfield.
Ive heard st Albans is nice, so will be considering here but also interested in other towns, or even small villages.
Does any one know if there are any ‘bad’ areas in st Albans?
We will be renting. We don’t really need to be close to any town centres. No children, so schools don’t need to be considered
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I'm in a village called Bricket wood, it's very nice and quiet, loads of woodland walks and cycle tracks. I can get the train to London once an hour (via Watford). We are located right on the M1 and M25 so transport is great.
It's not too far to drive to Hatfield from here either. The village falls under the St. Albans postcode area0 -
Old Hatfield is meant to be nice. Also look at Brookmans Park.
You may struggle to find a rental in a small village. Welwyn Garden City has some nice areas and is bigger so may be easier to find something to suit.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. Or if you can consider a bit further out try Hemel Hempstead/Berkhamstead area. I live in Hemel and love it, lots of new houses being built so plenty of rental stock. Obviously there are some less desirable areas (every large town has some) - PM me if you want to know more. I used to work in Hatfield and the commute was anything from 20 to 45 mins depending on the time of day.
Also agree that Welwyn Garden City has some lovely areas too (and a John Lewis!).£2 Savers Club 2016 #21 £14/£250

I love Hertford! And Ware is okay too, but slightly further out. If I'd not bought in Chingford, I may well have ended up in Hertford.
There's two stations, theatre, historical interest, river, pubs, shops, community feel, occasional street market, restaurants... most of it does seem lovely.

I work in Hatfield, near the uni and have lived in st Albans and also a village near Knebworth. The commute from st Albans depends where you are but can be heavy traffic. The commute where I am now is much better. Between Knebworth, Hertford, Welwyn garden city you gave some nice towns and villages and a lot more affordable than st Albans.0

My partner and I lived in Welwyn for a couple of years, I find it really nice and leafy. There are several buses to the uni as well as a train and bus station, with trains into central taking about half an hour. You also have Luton airport nearby which is great for travel to Europe. We lived in a couple of 1 bed flats that were around £600-700 PCM.Aim - BUYING A HOUSE  by November 2013!Saved = 100% on 03/07/12 :j0

From friends who live in St Albans I'd steer clear of Oysterfields, but other than that, not heard of any bad areas there. Can be bloomin expensive though.
From experience, the A414 past St Albans towards Hatfield is a b1tch at times and I avoid like the plague.
I used to work at the Hatfield Road end of St Albans and the rentals round there were quite reasonable, but that was 10 years ago.0
