I can't get it off! It just clicks round and round, like one of those
childproof tablet bottle caps.

Found a similar problem and a solution - pure brute force by the looks of it! :o

Another job for the lump hammer and Mole grips!

So, tomorrow morning looks like a quick trip to the Ford dealer for a replacement, then back to National for the oil change - after they give me 5 minutes to get out of earshot!

One on my old Escort used to come off easier when warm rather than cold, if I remember rightly used to have to push it down then turn it ?
One day I might be more organised...........

A respondent on Google's uk.rec.cars.maintenance suggested undoing it when the engine is cold, and it came off as normal. Obviously, this isn't an option when you want to drain the old oil, so I have fitted a new one. It doesn't "push and twist" exactly like a childproof cap, it seems to "click" to prevent it being overtightened.
