Moving out to get work done

We are seriously looking at getting a loft conversion, rewire, new boiler, new bathroom, new kitchen and a lot of ceilings replaced. I have budgeted accordingly and I have put 5k to one side for rented accommodation whilst it is done.

My wife feels strongly that we could stay in the property but personally I think it would make a lot easier job moving out. I'm looking at a rented property tomorrow for a 6 month period.

Am I going over the top bearing in mind that all ceilings in the house, which are lathe and plaster, are all going to be taken down and new ceilings fitted?
Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

No, I think this is sensible (as you are able to include the rental in your budget).

Having all the ceilings taken down will cause mega mess and dust, let alone all the other work.

Plus, it will allow the trades to get on with their work.

People rarely realise how stressful having work done is - even if it is just a bathroom!

I think you have the right idea.

You would be climbing the walls if you tried and stay!!!!
I was going to put the name of my plumbing business here so you know what I do should I give out any advice plumbing wise - however apparently I cant do that - go figure!!!!!

I was in your position recently. Mega works to our home.We moved to rented accomodation. This was a cost but various points arose:

The builders used our kitchen as a canteen, our bathroom and cloakroom for toilets, our double garage as site storage, our dining and living rooms as site office and meeting room. This meant I saved the cost of a site office, a canteen and drying room, a site toilet and two shipping containers for storage. Had I hired these the cost, including delivery and removal, would have been considerable

Had we stayed in our home it would have driven us mad.

The rented accomodation was nearby allowing me to visit my home to project manage and check work

The office from home was transferred to the rented home but this property had no internet - a bit inconvenient.

The rented property was large, allowing me to store all the items removed from the roof and garage. Think lawnmower, family bicycles, trampoline etc. Plus it allowed the storage of building materials in preparation for the fitting in our home. Plus it allowed the storage of items removed and awaiting the tip or Freecyclce.

The rented house had large areas of "soil", compost bins, recyclying bins, and dustbin. When this was added to that remaining at our home it was amazing what was disposed of - without needing skips.

The rented house was more convenient for shops and school runs than ours.

Ultimately, the rented house meant no DIY or maintenance to it - we barely mowed the lawn or weeded the garden. We just went back there each night, switched off and heaved a sigh of relief!

Move out (I take it you have 3 kids too?!?!)

Tell your builders you are moving out before they price up - I would not be surprised if you save almost all of the 'rent' money in reduced builders costs - most don't like working in an occupied home as they can't treat it like a building site (which it is, really) and end up spending lots of time putting it back to a house at the end of every day....

Plus it will be a nightmare living in the house while the work is being done - lathe and plaster ceilings will have 100 years of dust in them as well as the plaster! If you get the chance, pop by and see one come down - horrible job

    Good luck with it all

We moved into a mobile home which we put in our garden. We bought a cheap one, it was a bit draughty but certainly did its job.

It is true as I would factor into a quote whether a property is empty or not as it simply takes longer if someone is still living there using the facilities . . . .

We moved out this evening and are expecting to be roughing it for a month. This means the build will be faster (as the trades won't be stepping over us and generally being held up by occupants) and thus cheaper. Go for it!
