Purchasing house and insurance

Might sound like a daft question but here goes:
We're about to buy a house (FTB). Our mortgage broker has quoted us for home insurance but its about £10 p/m more than we've found online for a better quote. Obviously we're going to go back to him and ask him to see if he can get a better deal but were anticipating he will shrug his shoulders.
We're aware that insurance is a condition of the mortgage and that it must be in place in exchange. However, were considering doing a simultaneous exchange/completion. If this is the case, when do we need to get the insurance arranged by? Is it possible to arrange it and activate it at the point of purchase?

Yes, you put the insurer on notice and then activate it on the right day.0
