replacing a ceiling light

We've just about to move into our house but it't got an old fashioned (fully functioning)ceiling light that needs replacing with something more to our taste.

My knowledge of lights finishes with changing a bulb and putting a shade on - will it be easy to do myself or should I get someone with electrical experience.

Thanks

It is a fairly simple task to change a light fitting, but if you feel the need to ask the question then my advice is to get someone in with a bit of electrical know how.

You don't need a qualified electrician by any stretch of the imagination, but someone who understands that it may be "3 plated" at the ceiling rose will certainly save you grief.

When you undo the "rose" the cap over the electrics there may be a few different colour wires but the only two you need to remove are the two going to the actual light itself, remember where these come from and replace with the new light fitting

It is a simple enough thing to do. But, if you need to ask the question, then you probably need help. Certainly not necessary for the help to be an electrician.
I can afford anything that I want.

Before you purchase the new fitting, it may be worth checking if there is an Earth (CPC) wire present in the existing light fitting. If it is a pendant type light fitting, you can unscrew the ceiling rose/junction box cover and check if an Earth wire (green/yellow) is present. It's safer to isolate the lighting circuit first before checking, by switching off the mini circuit breaker or removing the fuse before doing this.

The reason for checking is, if you choose a new metal light fitting that requires an earth connection, it may be difficult to source an earth easily if there isn't one already present in the existing fitting.
