Installing Oil Fired Boiler and a bathroom

Options
My partner and I have recently bought an old cottage in the North East of Scotland.

We have so far managed to renovate bedrooms and living areas and now need to move onto the bathrooms.

We have knocked down/put up some new walls so what was a cloakroom can now be an en suite. It currently has a toilet and a sink. We are looking to install a bath with shower as well. Due to where the windows are, the bath can only go in one place. We need to have the toilet where the sink is, move the sink along to a wall where there was nothing, and have the bath along the wall where there was nothing. There is about a 2-3ft crawl space under the house.

One issue we have with this is that we currently only have electric and will be installing an oil fired boiler (as we are off the gas grid). Can anyone recommend a good shower system that will give us a decent shower when everything is installed?

We have a joiner and a plasterer who has worked for us so far, but other than a plumber, what sort of trades person would we need to contact?

The main bathroom also needs totally redone. There is a sink, bath and toilet in there at the moment but we will be replacing the bath with a shower enclosure. The toilet and shower (currently next to each other) will be getting switched due to location of the window.

Sorry if I have missed important information, but I am a complete novice with this and it has all been a giant learning experience so far!

Also if anyone has done this recently and has rough costs for any part, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

There are a few types of shower you could have.

Gravity mixer - Pumped mixer - Electric.

What type of boiler is it you are having fitted ? is it a vented system or sealed system ?
Vented would be a gravity hot water system - expansion tank in the loft and a hot water tank.
    Sealed system ( Combi ) ?

Electric would be the cheaper option as you are only using the water and eleccy you need to.

As for trades - you'll need an electrician as well.

  • We havent decided on a boiler yet, we are still at the very early stages of research but I don't really know where to look. I would imagine we would go for a sealed system. Will that impact on the water pressure we would get?

We have a plumber coming out tomorrow to give us advice and an idea of costs but I want to be armed with the correct questions so I at least sound like I know what I am talking about!

A sealed system will give better pressure than a gravity system.

Have you thought of biomass for the heating ? Lots of options for boilers and fuels from ground source heating to gasification boilers, might be worth looking at.

Sorry MB, but gravity hot water has no connection to whether a system is either sealed or vented, nor does a sealed system have better (hot water) pressure than open vented, the two are unconnected.
Given that the OP has more than 1 bathroom then I would say a combi is out. An unvented hot water cylinder will give better hot water pressure (assuming that the incoming cold main pressure is sufficient) and better performance for more than 1 outlet, without the complications of pumping a vented hot water cylinder.
Have you considered a wood/multi-fuel stove with back boiler in addition to the oil? Integration is 'reasonably' straight forward with a thermal store. Again, this will give good hot water performance.
Just out of interest, what part of NE Scotland? Nowhere near Elgin are you?
