Fax Machines

I have a printer with built in fax machine which recognises BT call sign. I am thinking of dumping Call Sign and just reverting to the 1 number on my line. Do fax machines know if the call coming through is a fax or a voice call? Can i set the printer to receive a fax after 2 rings but if its a voice call to ring until answered?
Hope that makes sense.

The fax machine will only recognise an incoming fax if the call is answered and the machine at the other end is sending the standard fax tones. Many machines will do this and if they don't detect an incoming fax tone they will produce another ring (e.g. on an extension phone) to alert the recipient that the call may be a voice call.
If you only receive the occasional fax it may be worth getting one of those free fax to email numbers such as efax, although they are 0870 or 0871 numbers they are still worth having as they eliminate the need for fax paper and cut down on spam faxes.0
