Just a few ideas of the top of my end.
Use the subway, it is a fantastic way to get around, safe and cheap.
Spend a morning in Central Park, it's a vast area to explore, take a picnic and sit on the grand lawn, a cheap but lovely way to spend half a day.
Use the New York forum on Tripadvisor, it is one of the best travel forums on there
Take the Staten Island ferry, it is free and gives great views of the Statue of Liberty and the New York skyline on the way back.
Plan what you want to see and try and make a loose plan for each day, then plan your route using the subway and walking, you will never get lost in NYC, it is easy to navigate around, just like a big grid with avenues going down and streets going across.0 -
Hi
The New York thread is your best option for lots of help. My tips;
Take the Staten Island ferry for photo ops of the skyline (free)
Eat on the go - falalfel, hot dogs, slice of NY pizza for $1, build your own salads in deli bars etc
Check out happy hours in bars as beer can be costly
Walk everywhere - cheaper than being stuck in traffic in a cab and you see all kinds of things (saw Nic Cage filming)
Visit Brooklyn - very different to NYC and more laid back/cheaper
Enjoy! x0 -

All of the above plus get the subway to Brooklyn heights both day and night to see the skyline, amazing. When we went during the day we then walked back Over the Brooklyn Bridge.
. We actually walked loads, bought a 3 day unlimited subway ticket and only used 6 journeys on it. an hatter itself is soooo easy to walk around.
One little tip, when we went to Brooklyn we went for a meal and it cost about $10 each for "lunch special " in nice restaurant . In NY itself we were paying over double that .
We came back a week agoTOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T0 -
Why not just read the New York sticky at the top of the page?

Another free place to visit is The High Line. Its a new elevated park on a disused rail line through the meat packing district. Well worth a visit. What's gone will never come back. But it exists when you think of it ...0

Brooklyn is one of the 5 boroughs that make up New York city.
I believe you may both be meaning Manhatten, when you refer to NYC/NY
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0
