wooden decking - is this paint or varnish

hi

the decking at our house needs re-doing. as it was done by previous owner i dont know if it was paint or varnish. it is in dark green colour.

can someone advise whether it is paint or varnish so i can get the right product prior to stripping it off with possibly a pressure washer!

It looks lovely as it is.

    Why bother redoing it?

You will never get it looking that good again.

Yuk! It looks as if it could be paint as I used to have a varnished deck at my previous property & even having suffered one of the worse winters for years it never looked anything like that. I always used Liberon products on my decking.

I think trying first with a pressure washer is the best way to go & perhaps try some wire wool to remove any stubborn stuff. Remember decking needs to be cleaned regularly with a pressure washer to keep it looking it's best & to stop it becoming dangerous & slippery underfoot.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

    You're joking right?

Oh now you've got me doubting. Please tell me you were joking?

If not - I'm sorry. I'm sure it will look wonderful when you've finished.

Rest assured my garden is a complete mess.

looks like it's a water based stain , if you've got a power hose you should be able to blast it off, and put a proper decking stain on

Oh XYZ123 I really am sorry.

Well yes you have your hands full there. I do think it looks like you have some bitumen, certainly paint.

A pressure hose and stout yard broom should clear the paint debris. Then scrape the stubborn bits.

But that wood is in bad condition. Maybe spray with a clear or coloured wood preserver to see what that looks like before you try stain.

It should look great when you've finished.:o
