The phone rang, number 01062...
Hello we are the global support organization for Windows.
Oh - are you Microsoft?
No, we are not Microsoft, we do the global support for all Windows systems.
What - all Windows systems globally?
Yes.
Oh, OK...
(Thinks will play a little while...)
They then tried to get me to run Event Viewer, which didn't work, because I was on a Linux VM.
They tried to get me to click on Start in the bottom left corner of the screen but I said there is a Rubbish Bin there.
They asked me to type Windows-R to open a run box.
There was a bit of faffing about to see what the box really was, because entering eventvwr into the search box does nothing on Linux.
They then got me to open a browser to https://www.ammyy.com, which I did, and then to allow remote access onto my machine.
I told them I couldn't do that because it wasn't allowed.
They tried to explain further, but I said that no, I could not allow them access.
The supervisor spoke to me again, and I said no I couldn't allow that very sorry.
And then I mentioned that the software appears to be for Windows but my computer is running Linux.
He then said that they told me that they were from Windows and I never told them I was running Linux.
I said that I did mention it to the person I had first spoken to.
He then twigged and asked me if I was a bloody techie.
And I said yes I am and I work in IT support for a large organization, but it had been fun chatting for the past 15 minutes.
He took it in good grace and even said goodbye before hanging up.
Anyway, in summary:

P.S. I missed it at the time, but the ammyy home page has a warning about this exact scam there. If I'm in the mood to play, I may mention that at the appropriate point next time.0

Well done for taking that caller out of action for 15 minutes, that is 15 minutes they could have spent harassing someone whom could fall for the scam.
Always a good laugh with them0 -

I had a few evenings where I had nothing better to do, managed to drag one out over 2 nights and around 2 hours whilst I was watching clips on youtube. Eventually, I got bored.0

I had a call last night. He was Indian. I pretended to be a bit thick, which wasn't hard because I am. I also pretended to be a bit deaf which is not hard because I am. However, I have heard about this scam before.
I think he said he was from BT, not sure. He said my emails and downloads were taking too long and he could fix it. He asked me if I was sitting in front of my computer. I said no. He said could I switch it on.
I told him I lived in a 3 storey town house and it was on the top floor in the office and I was downstairs (none of which is true, I had my laptop in front of me and I don't live in a townhouse.) He asked me if I could go upstairs and switch it on. I said that it would take an awful long time because I had to go all the way upstairs and then it was very slow.
He replied that was okay and he would phone me back in half an hour when it was switched on. I wasn't prepared for this so I said actually to tell you the truth my computer isn't working. He then asked why. I said that I had spilled orange juice over the keyboard some time ago and had not bothered to get it fixed. He asked me when was I getting it fixed so that he could phone me back so he could help me. I said, I don't think I am going to bother. The computer gets on my nerves, it is so slow. I can't be bothered with computers.
Well, he hung up still quite friendly but sounding a bit gobsmacked. That was the best I could do. I couldn't think of anything more amusing on the spot although I would have liked to.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
