Easy and quick works for me too. This year I'm growing raspberries, strawbs, gooseberries and I've just put in an apple tree too. The rasps are probably the easiest as they grow like a weed and produce pounds of fruit. The strawbs grow in wall baskets and seem to be doing well this year.

What about mini apple trees? They're cool and although you do have to water, you don't have to worry too much about them. VM have a few cute ones:

    Thanks all :)

    He's asked for:

    Mini apple tree
    Mini cherry tree
    Raspberries
    Blackberries
    Blackcurrants
    Redcurrants
    Blueberries

Very proud of his little enjoyment and he's looking forward to sharing his produce with his parrot (and making me make jam, gateaus and pies!!!)

    :D

Hope his new hobby goes well for him! What a wish list ! My mum got me hooked by giving me a little strip of garden and a packet of radish seeds & some Night scented stock seeds.I have enjoyed getting my children interested in the garden & countryside & out into the fresh air!

It's good to start them young, my little lad has his own patch on our new allotment, he's growing a row of pumpkins for Halloween,he grew 13 beauties last year :)

Like other have said I'd go for raspberries and strawberries. We've just planted a blackcurrant, redcurrant and some gooseberries too. Tayberries are very nice as well.

Mini apple tree - check that the variety is self fertile or there are nearby trees of the right sort to pollinate, apple trees flower at different times and an early flowering sort won't help polinate a late flowerer.
    Mini cherry tree - ditto
    Raspberries
Blackberries - there are garden breeds that won't take over everywhere with thorns!
    Blackcurrants
    Redcurrants
Blueberries - check that the soil is acidic. If not he can acidify an area or grow these in pots (lots of watering)
    :D

That sounds like a great garden!

Oh shegirl what a brilliant challenging pastime/hobby to get DS involved in. I'm sure he will learn a lot and baffle all and sundry with his knowledge as it grows(no pun intended ;) )

And I'm sure he will delight in sharing all his produce in due course, even if it's only with his parrot! :)
