Late 50s. My mother was definitely not OS, anything but, although she could be if it was something she felt strongly about.

'During the war, you couldn't get them,' she said every night as she put her lemon slice in the fridge from her gin and tonic. She later took to putting the whole glass in with the lemon slice, until one entire rack in the door had a line of six of them - because no-one who made her G&Ts would use the old, manky glasses and slices.

I've had to learn everything from these boards. I muddled along for years, never ever managing to feel I was anywhere near getting it right. This website has been an absolute God-send.
    Better is good enough.

Apparently I'm 56. Must have happened when I was looking the other way.

A lot of the stuff discussed on here is simply how I grew up.

Perhaps the board should be renamed 'Older Than I Thought Style'

I am not clicking '40's' as I am bang on 40 :rotfl:. My head & body don't feel like I am 40! We were very poor when I was growing up so I think it made me appreciate things a lot more.

I enjoy being OS, my family take the mickey sometimes because of my meal planning, & I have lists for absolutely everything :rotfl: but hey it works for our family! If it was just the two of us I don't think I would be so regimented.

Early 40s. I am finding that I need to simplify, to slow down and to live more frugally. It goes against what we are 'supposed' to do, which is to work work work, spend spend spend, in order to keep the economy going. In my 20s I was a bit of a spend-thrift, but as I get older I am finding the old-style way of life more rewarding.

My mum wasn't OS at all, she wasn't that close to her mum (my nan) either, and in turn has made it difficult for anyone to be close to her.... long story. So I never learnt anything of either of them. Ive just muddled through.
I came on this site in my early 40s when I split from my ex partner, panicking that I would never be able to afford my new mortgage and have a decent life. Well thanks to this site, I was wrong. I don't shop till I drop anymore, I count every penny I have and have been able to afford 2 holidays and a weekend away this year. Looking back to 2007 I have learned a lot, ie YS shopping, cooking, making do and only buying the necessities and always shopping around. Im proud to say that I don't own a credit card and everything is paid for and I now only work 30 hours a week and have enough savings to slow my life down. My new boyfriend is very OS and works on a farm so he can cook from scratch with the meat and veg he gets free and hes teaching me how to cook from scratch to. From making chutneys and pickling and xmas cakes and xmas alcohol (ie sloe gin and flavoured vodkas for presents. This is the life I have always wanted and im lucky to have this as well as his cottage to stay in at the weekend and my home in the town during the working week, this is the life Ive always wanted. OS all the way :T

That was interesting! it seems that it increases exponentially until the 50s then declines the same way!

I am 59 btw, but like the others feel 'in my twenties' providing I don't have to move about!

I love this board - I like being able to pass on tips learned from my nan and sometimes from mum. Nan was the big influence on me though - and I must mention Miss James my cookery teacher! Cantankerous old biddy who bore a distinct resemblance to Margeret Rutherford! She taught me such a lot and I never appreciated it at the time!
I also like the friendliness here - and am learning from others all the time!
