HALIFAX - Direct Debit Nightmare

I bank with Halifax, I'm currently experiencing a cash flow problem, decided I'd cancel my DD last night as I had insufficient funds, logged on at around 10pm only to find Halifax had already processed the DD which resulted in me going 1. overdrawn and 2. No money for me and my kids till money clears on Wednesday.:mad:

I called the bank immediately, and was informed this is usual practice for a Sunday night, I'VE NEVER BEEN INFORMED OF THIS?!?!? Basically I'm screwed money wise till Wednesday!

I want to complain, anyone have any advice? Surely there's something in the DD mandate protecting me from this sort of behaviour from my bank?? HELP

You need to cancel a DD the working day before it is due.
If it was to due to be paid today you needed to cancel it on Friday. You will have been informed via the T+Cs. Have you read them?

When was your direct debit due to go out?

Cancelling it at 10pm on a Sunday evening wouldn't have stopped them from paying the direct debit anyway. Its not a bank working day the cancellation wont have been processed until some point today.

Its quite common for banks to process direct debit payments on a weekend for payment on a Monday, I know RBS do this as do Natwest and Halifax, Bank Of Scotland and Lloyds TSB.

It will also be in the Terms and conditions of the account which you will have been sent when you opened the account.

If money is tight at the moment you might want to cancel your direct debits and arrange to pay them via debit card as and when you have the money. Or maybe you can change the dates to ones when you will have funds in the account to pay them

I would also look at where you can make savings in your budget and cut out unnecessary extravagances until you can get back on your feet.
Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both.

The direct debit would already be in process from the originator.

If it is still the same day the bank can recall it.

Quit complaining at the bank, you've left it until last minute, you only realised at 10pm on a Sunday that you've no more money to feed your family?

If you contact them asap and ask them to recall it.

    Thanks for the replies.

In the past I've been able to cancel the DD the night before and have never had any problems?

I just don't see how if I've got DD to go out on 1st, they're processed on the 30th and money taken on the 30th, it ISN'T THE FIRST! I will go and read my T&Cs and for future I now know Halifax do this, but surely I should've been made aware..... Again I will read the fine print! SIGH

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
