Do Retail jobs like Argos/Primark/tescos etc run crb/dbs checks?

I worked for Halfords (if you want to include that in one of those retails stores in the first post), and they didn't do a CRB check.0

I think that it shouldn't matter to your job hunting friend if they do checks or not, he should apply to them all anyway.
If he finds out that they do and then gets rejected, its not like any harm came of the practice of application.
Generally shops like Argos/Primark won't bother, but money lenders and things might, but it is different company to company and possibly store to store.
Saving for a year in Japan.
I need around £10,000. Help me get there! :cool:0 -
Just wondered if anyone knew if companies like primark/argos/homebase/betting jobs/tescos/asda/sainsbury and similar run dbs/crb checks ?
My friend has recently been given a police caution and is worried he will not be able to get a job due to his caution.
It they did they would be breaking the law. As they would have no reason under the DBS/CRB to complete one.
DBS do seem to be cracking down on unlawful ones and looking for reasons to issue them which is great.
Most employers will ask for details of criminal convections and he should declare it if asked. The futures bright the future is Ginger0 -

Presumably you can confirm that they do not attempt to suggest that ordinary shopfloor workers are requested to go through DBS checking.
My reply said I can only confirm that 1 employer doesn't use the DBS forms and I imagine the same for the others (with not having worked for any of them I cant say) minus betting shops.
I wasnt going to give the wrong information.0 -
I never said anything of the sort.

What was wrong with my reply ?
What was wrong with your reply?
Well, as I quoted it, you said,Only 1 I know is in bold, I would imagine all the others are the same, not sure
about betting shops though
And my suggestion was that what you would be able to confirm is what you have now confirmed. That is, unless I am mistaken, you are saying that they don't ask shopfloor workers to have DBS checks carried out.0 -
Thanks for all above post will put his mind to ease, I also checked further on this matter also and found :
google this : application-form.org
Shows job application forms and what they ask for!
I found matalan, Co-op food stores, Morrisons, starbucks, pcworld, currys, primark etc etc and pretty much most places mention this section on there application forms:
Rehabilitation of Offenders
"Have you ever been convicted of a criminal offence which is not a spent conviction within the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act
1974? If yes give details or no.
Others mention Rehabilitation of Offenders section, and ask to only list NOT "spent" convictions, very rare but found one that listed NOT spent cautions, this would be conditional caution not a simple caution my friend got which is already spent so not requiring to be mentioned.
So unless your criminal conviction/caution which is not spent yet then you do have to declare it sadly. Simple police cautions are spent as they given so do not have to be declared.
Poundland of all places, and few others also mention some positions within there company require a dbs/crb check, I assume this if for handling cash or management positions since it mentions Managers quite often.
I did try and post some links to other application forms but MSE forums says im too new, shame cant help folk around here!
but you can google "job application forms" or use the application form website (google it) and see for yourself how its worded/looks.
All in all It does not look too promising for people without unspent convictions, they may have to wait till it becomes spent then they do not have to declare it at all. Id wager most folk just lie anyhow! For simple cautions its already spent and rarely mentioned, they also seem interested in people with unspent Records.
As for running dbs/crb checks, it does not say it 100% clearly, I can guess some places where cash/management are involved they may run it otherwise it does not appear many retail places/supermarkets run it...0 -
Offenders Act

Well if they are seeking to employ people in roles requiring chartered accountant status etc or working with children or vulnerable adults, it would be OK. Cash handling doesn't make someone eligible for DBS check.0 -
There is also a change to what needs to be declared and what is spent by a law that is due to be passed shortly or recently passed.0

Yeah I heard somewhere about bookies running dbs/crb checks due to cash handling somewhere, maybe it is untrue. General handling of money though I think your right and should not need checks.
But the poundland app does seem to apply dbs/crb checks are run on higher positions, management was hinted on the application form.
the ROA act is still due to be updated in November, so many people are still waiting on it, no doubt will bring much relief to many people and should hopefully cut down the waiting time before there convictions become spent.
I guess in UK we are lucky to have ROA, giving people further chances to get back into the world.0 -
I worked as a manager for Coral racing a few years ago, i can tell you, they do perform checks on their staff; even those at ground level.
The ROA act, is it this you're referring to?
