O2 are credit ruiners

Options
There's already quite a few entries on this forum about o2 butchering people's credit. A quick Google search confirms that what they did to me, they've done to hundreds of others.

So here's my experience. After being with o2 for years, I decided to take a mobile contract with T-Mobile. When T-Mobile took over my number, o2 stopped my Direct Debit, apparently I had a final balance of £9. They never sent me a final bill, they never sent me a text message or called me or anything. My payments to them had stopped so why would I expect I had a balance left to pay them?

So recently when I applied for credit and was turned down, I was shocked. I'd never been late to pay a bill and I've never missed a payment on any account for anything. I checked all 3 credit agencies and Equifax and Callcredit both showed that o2 not only put 6 late payments on my credit file but also a default. I was fuming, I can't believe a well known company like o2 could get away with doing this to people.

I explained the situation to Equifax and Callcredit. Equifax agreed to dispute it with o2 for me and they've removed all bad marks from my account. I haven't had a reply from Callcredit yet and they update their reports every 30 days so I could be waiting a while before that gets fixed.

What a nightmare...be wary of o2 people, don't let them do this to you!

So long as it was definitely O2 that cancelled the direct debit and not you, you shouldn't have too much difficulty in getting this removed.

How did you normally get your bills, online or via post? If you used to check online, that is the only potential problem I can see for you; i.e. you should have checked after you cancelled your contract to make sure there was no balance outstanding.

Yes, communications suppliers are attrocious for this - BT allegedly go through stages of defaulting people when their contract comes to an end as well.

izools started a thread on it recently.
