Painting over Silk paint

We've been putting this off for a while but we are planning on freshening up the paintwork in the house (dining, living room, hallway).
Unfortunately, it appears the majority of the painted surfaces were painted with vinyl silk paint (by the previous owners).
The painted walls are also textured and this also includes the ceiling!!
The living room ceiling was painted in cream but its quite a dark room, so I want to go with white or similar (walls are papered - no problem there).
I would have preferred to have gone with the Dulux 'light and space' range to brighten up the area but since its been painted with Silk, I'm assuming I have to paint over this with silk also?
I heard somewhere that you need to key the surface, this would be a problem with the textured walls... Can I simply prep with sugar soap and paint over with Silk? Or do I need something more 'substantial' to prep, then paint over with Silk - Will I also need to apply primer to ensure it adheres to the surface?
IF I apply a primer, could I go for the Matt emulsion instead or should I just stick with Silk...
I hope I've made sense here
I jsut want to be totally prepared before I start.
Any advice would be appreciated.
TIA!

There should not be any problems painting Matt over silk, just make sure its clean and well keyed up.I have never had any problem myself in 30 years in the trade0

Thanks for that, what would you recommend for keying a textured ceiling?
I certainly wouldn't want to have to try and do that with sandpaper. Would some sort of stiff brush work?0 -
No problem
Just sand the walls down properly, take all dust, dirt off and put two coats of Matt on Silk0
