Finding historical property values

I'm trying to find a reliable price history for some properties I'm considering buying, but am finding it terribly difficult to find what I need.

Here are my current thoughts:

1. Property Websites: These tend to give crude estimates by multiplying the average price movement by the property starting price. So the percentage increase for all properties in the same area is exactly the same...

2. Is there a central database which shows all historical transacted prices i.e. actual prices for which the properties were sold? And is there also some database which shows accurate, non-generic valuations i.e. where someone like a surveyor or estate agent has valued the actual property in question?

3. Should I approach the local council to request a price history, or am I wasting my time?

Thanks!

These are the actual prices of properties sold, put in a address or postcode and you'll get a list:
    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/house-prices.html

    hope this helps.

Zoopla who are totally useless with guesstimations of value actually have a sold price section giving prices back to 1995

    http://www.zoopla.co.uk/house-prices/

Of course, none of these sites give all sold prices as some (including for instance commercial property) will not appear. It's only what might be called bog-standard residential sales which are shown.

Actual transacted prices (otherwise known as Sold Prices) are all over the internet

    zoopla
    myhouseprice
    nethouseprice
    ourproperty
    rightmove
    etc

Valuations aren't. When surveyors charge a homeowner £200 or so for the most basic of valuations, what would their incentive be to post these up for public view? Also, in a fast-moving market, if we ever get one again, the valuations will be out of date almost as fast as they're posted. So, not much value there.
