    I've never been in the situation, but, is it compulsory to take paternity leave, or just an extra paid holiday?

    not compulsory i don't believe i have outstanding hols also.

    Someone might correct me, but I am pretty confident that you are still entitled to it as you are still working for the company. Of course, they don't have to pay it after you have left. So if your notice is up 1 week after birth, you get only 1 week pat.
