Asbestos insulating boards?
Comments

Thanks all for your feedback.
The contractor came round yesterday and said that he was pretty sure it was chrysotile (will confirm in writing ). This is on all the ceilings upstairs AND downstairs, fortunately it is 'very good condition' and he will not advise that it should be removed.
I was wondering what discount I should be asking for ? Should I get a removal quote to back up this up ? (I don't think we will remove unless we had to, in which case we would have probably walked away!)
ThanksZ

I have been doing some research!
It appears from several reports I found that White Asbestos is to be found in the majority of houses built or refurbished between 1950 and 1980 in various guises.
I would therefore think it would be hard to get a large reduction in orice but you can try!
The main thing is the HSE advise it does not pose a health risk as long as it is not drilled or cut without following certain guidelines.
With regard to disposal of asbestos from domestic properties this guidence for Local Authorities provides some information that may help and shows the LA's responsibilities:

Thanks dougk. The council have confirmed that the majority of local houses do have asbestos in some form, so finding one without is going to be tricky !
The property however was marketed as offering 'potential' but we find that we now have to shelve our plans due to the 'restriction' of what we can do to it (knocking down a wall, putting in ensuites, loft conversion etc.). what price inconvenience ?!
CheersZ

I now need to get a UKAS testing laboratory (https://www.ukas.org) to take a few samples from the property (in surrey) and do some analysis. I've had a quote of £250 + vat for this work.
Has anyone used a UKAS accredited testing lab and would recommend one that is a little cheaper than nearly £300 !
Thanks[/QUOTE
