Travel insurance for student spending year abroad

                    Hello,
I'm a student, aged 20, spending a year abroad as part of my course as of this September. I've been looking for travel insurance so that I can book my flights ASAP but have found that common providers, such as Direct Travel (recommended on this site) place limits on the length of trips on both single trip and annual multi trip policies. This poses a problem because I need to be covered for pretty much the whole year, not just 31 days here and 31 days there.
Does anyone know of a way round this issue?
Thanks.

Try Gap year insurance. That provided us with the cover we needed.
I think it was from QBE.0 -
I spent a year at a European university as part of my course and I think I used Endsleigh insurance as they do a student abroad cover. It covers more than usual travel insurance and should include damage to where you're living, burglary and the sort of stuff student insurance here covers as well as the medical and travel side.0

Effectively you want single trip cover, for 1 year, not annual multitrip insurance.
http://www.outbackerinsurance.com/travel_insurance_quote.php might help, or https://www.google.co.uk/compare/travelinsurance 'extended trip'?0 -

It wouldn't necessarily be a single trip though. Everyone I knew who did a year abroad in Europe came home for Christmas and most for Easter. OP doesn't say if the year will be at uni or working. If its at uni and they're in halls then they might not be able to stay at Xmas etc. Also, if they are at uni its worth considering insurance that covers their tuition fees if something goes wrong.0 -
            Where will you be studying?
Will you be likely to be doing any further travelling in nearby countries during the holidays? Will you be studying at another university? If so, they will often have their own insurance that you are required to take which may cover some of the issues mentioned above.0 -
Thanks for the replies everyone, they are much appreciated because I'm a total noob, having never bought travel insurance before.
I will be studying in Vienna, Austria, and I will be returning home at least twice during the year and hopefully travelling to as many places around Europe as is humanly (and financially) possible, if that makes any difference.Effectively you want single trip cover, for 1 year, not annual multitrip insurance.
<outbacker insurance> might help, or <google comparison> 'extended trip'?
I think specialised gap year insurance looks like it would suit me better than single trip insurance, though I didn't know such a thing even existed until now! Those links were very helpful though, thanks.totallybored wrote: »It wouldn't necessarily be a single trip though. Thanks, I have now added some of that information above. Luckily I don't need tuition fee cover because under the Erasmus scheme I don't pay any tuition fees! :beer:Where will you be studying?

Again, I have now answered those questions above. Interesting point about the university requiring me to get particular cover - I hadn't considered that, although the university have been in contact and I've heard no mention of insurance as far as I can remember...0
