hi any advice would very much appreciated. I am thinking of purchasing a house with thought of extending later on however in the garage is a manhole cover, I have rang south Yorkshire water & they don't have anything on record, how do I go about finding out the purpose of the manhole & if it serves other houses & also if this would cause any problems when I extend the property im thinking of putting a 4th bedroom on top of the garage, thanks in advance for taking the time to reply. x

It's could just be for your toilet.
Lift the cover. If its only 1ft deep then that is probably what it is.0 -
by the way its a heavy duty cast iron cover. The property has a toilet downstairs so yes it could be for the toilet.0

if its just for the toilet in the house then can this be extended over? don't mean to sound silly its my 1st buy & I really don't have a clue x0

If the garage stays as a garage, with a new bedroom up above, you have not altered the drainage. Consequently you have no concerns.
If the garage becomes a ground floor living room it would be wise to replace the manhole cover with a double seal type. This should be accessible - hence it would be a recessed lid to receive your floor finishes.0
