I think it is referring to the letter "i" on the rear model designation letters.
On my old passat for instance, it worked like this.
All normal silver TDI = 100 bhp
Red I in TDI = 130 bhp
Red D and I in the badge = 150 bhp
All red lettering meant something even more powerful.
I may have got the bhp levels mixed up and it will be different for the Golf but it is how you could determine the BHP of the engine simply by looking at the badge.0 -

you cant get 150bhp old passats - they only go up to 130bhp0
