I know that it's possible to get an MOT carried out 1 month prior to the current one expiring, but is it possible to get the 1st test done in advance and have it dated on the 3rd anniversary of registration?
I've done a good Google search and have found conflicting comments on this.

Do you mean if date of reg is say 1 August 2013, you have MOT done on 1st July 2013 but want date of MOT to be 1 August 2013?
If you have it done on 1st July and present the V5C when the MOT is done the expiry date will be 31st July the following year. A 13 month MOT.0 -
