Do all life insurance policies carry on after employment?

The reason for me asking is my husbands life insurance continues to provide cover for six months after the date he leaves his employment.

A good friend has died a few months after leaving employment and I am trying to find out if his life insurance will still be valid in order to provide his family with some security

We are not currently sure who he was insured through his employer we are still trying to find out but thought I would ask the question in case it is a general thing in policies?

Thanks

Are you talking about death in service or a life policy they took out?
If its death in service i would assume it varies depending on the provider. If its a policy they took out then it is not dependent on their employment.

Thank you for your reply. Yes it is death in service. We are trying to get the details of the policy but it is a rather difficult one to tackle

I would have assumed that the term "Death in service" implies that it ends when the person leaves said service, so it's a surprise to me to know that there is a policy which provides cover after then

I suppose the thing to do would be to contact the employer, who would have the relevant T&Cs.

Most DIS cover ends when employment ends.

The legal personal representative of the deceased would need to contact the scheme Trustees to establish when/if cover ends for that particular scheme.

Did the deceased review their insurance cover when their circumstances change? No DIS provided by new employer?

I finished a job on Friday, start a new one tomorrow. The wife suggested that I take it easy over the weekend!
  • sadly he was poorly and off sick, and despite saying he was too poorly to attend work meetings, they dismissed him in his absence

He would not have been in a position to get any further insurance, he was not with it, he was too ill to think straight

Sadly his diagnosis that he was dying came too late, it was after he was dismissed from the job.

Unfortunately we are more than 3 months since he left employment so too late to bring a tribunal case for wrongful dismissal.

I am not sure what else to suggest to the widow. It is all rather desperate
