Caller ID blocking?

OK so this may sound like a stupid question but,

Is it possible to stop your phone number from showing up on someone's caller ID when you ring them? We've just had a call (I know who from) and when I looked at the screen it just said 'Call' rather than the number so I left it, and they left a message.

When I went thru my call log afterwards to see where they'd phoned from it didn't show up ( I know as the first number that came up was from a previous PPI call that has been ringing over the last week), but when I rang 1471 it said the number of the person that had rung.

I know this may sound insignificant, but this person was the reason we got an ansaphone/caller ID in the first place and at one point we had the number blocking service. I don't understand why it's not showing on the phone, but 1471 have the info.

Any help would be gratefully received :(

Yes you can stop your number being forwarded when you make any call, you can ask your service provider to do this , so all calls made don't show the number on the person called phone, or you can enter a code before the number called, on a per call basis, think you put 141 in front of the number and your phone number isn't passed on , but if the number called has anonymous caller rejection, the call won't be connected

This sounds like a fault at the exchange. If you can access the caller's details by ringing 1471 then the caller cannot have with-held their number.

Also, a bit unsure here, I think it's possible to dial 1571 to with-hold a number for an individual call. Happy to be corrected.

    It's 141, as mentioned above.

1571 is BT's optional message service.

Thanks, That's pretty much the conclusion I came to. Just an unhappy coincidence that it happened to be the person who had been a nuisance caller in the past :o

this person can be quite devious (I would get abusive calls but they wouldn't hang up their end for ages, so I wouldn't be able to dial out) so it's a bit of a reassurance that they're not starting up with their old tricks again (I would still have them blocked if it were up to me)

    Thanks everyone :)

If that were me, I'd seriously consider changing my number. Might even be a money saving option if you go to another telco provider and get a better deal!

Over the years I have tracked 2% of calls not correctly showing a number (where one was available).

This appears to be a by product of the FSK (frequency shift keying) technique where a spurious glitch creates an invalid number at the customer's end BUT is OK at the exchange and accessible via 1471 for a read back.

Oh......... if only I could. Unfortunately it's a family member (not my side) so we're stuck with it.

    That's families for you ;)
