Changing supplier with key meter

Hi everyone
I moved into my house last November (split from Hubble who used to do all bills etc) the house I moved back to had key meters in so I've just kept these.
I'm on british gas clear and simple for both. At the minute I put £40 on the electric per month and over the winer £60 gas and summer £20 gas ....
Now I'm thinking will I be tied in to British gas until November and if not I was going to try shopping around.
I like the key meters (never had them before) as I don't get any bills.
Should I call British gas and ask for what my usage is and then do I just go to a comparison site ??

Sorry if this sounds thick but hubbie used to do all this and I've just started to look at my bills and try to get them down.

So far I've dropped virgin down by £30/month and vodafone by £15/month :D

Thanks for any replies x

  • prepayment meters cost no more then the suppliers standard tariff minus the direct debit discount.

Prepayment has no contract though. Without knowing your usage figures the only way to compare would be by standing charge & price per unit rate. Each area has a different charge so people here would not be able to compare for you without knowing your postcode.

Did you call to register up with the company when you moved in because if you did not do this you could be paying someones debt.

See when a person runs a debt up the energy company can put a prepayment meter in and set the debt to recover so much a week. To avoid this you have to make sure the meter is in your own name with the company

Yes, do a comparison to see that you are on the best deal for you.

You should get a statement from your supplier once a year, and following any price changes - this should have your annual consumption on it.
As you've not been in a year, you could call/email/write to BG and ask them what they expect you to use in a year.

You could put your monthly payments into a comparison site to give you a rough idea, but it is always better to use annual kWh.
