HMRC say I owe £2k!

Today, I received a letter from HMRC saying that I owe £541 from the 11/12 tax year. I called up, and while setting up a payment plan was told I also owe £1k from last year and £300 so far from this year!!!! As you can imagine I wasn't amused! All this because of my income! And now I won't receive anything. My question is, is there a time limit for this sort of thing? HMRC say they notified me about the £541 in November but I never received it. I've only been told about the £1k and £300 over the phone. Is there anything I can do???

In short No. If you received the payments from them and you where not entitled based on your income then there is nothing you can do. If you disagree with the info they hold, you can dispute the overpayment. But there is no limit on how much you can owe as it will be money you have received from them so they are entitled to request it be paid back.No One I Think Is In My Tree.:cool:0

How about just pay the money back you've obviously been overpaid..0 -
You said that you were in the middle of setting up a payment plan when you found out you owed more. What happened about that payment plan? Did they say you can no longer get a payment plan?
If they stop payments and you struggle to pay your bills you can set up a payment plan.....regardless of the amount you owe.0 -
I remember the good old days when it was reviewed every 6 months - things were so much more simple back then - roll on the simplification that Universal Credit will bring...
...oh hold on
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0
